Flat, 1997-1999

70 x 90 inches
color photograph

Each room in an apartment was painted a color specific to its use. During a period of two weeks in June 1997 the ceilings of all the rooms and the tops of the doorways between them were photographed from the floor straight up.  These photographs were scanned at a high resolution to depict any existing detail of the ceiling (paint texture, insects, dents, etc.)  All of the 44 scans were then montaged together seamlessly to produce an image of the complete ceiling without perspective.  The image is printed at a size (approx. 6 by 8 feet) sufficient to present a picture of a lived-in space in direct relation to the body of the viewer.
